Known as the city of bridges, the first permanent bridge the Ponte das Barcas (a
pontoon bridge) – was built in 1806.
In recent years, UNESCO recognised its historic centre as a World Heritage Site.
One of Portugal's most internationally famous products, Port wine, was named
after the city.
